LOOK BACK – PEDRO THE LION ‘Winners Never Quit’ Jade Tree (2000)

This weeks ‘Look Back’, focuses on David Bazan’s accomplished sophomore effort Winners Never Quit.

Charming, understated and peppered with Bazan’s wry lyrical charm, this engaging story of two brothers following vastly different paths gives an interesting insight into the idiosyncrasies of Pedro The Lion’s duality with the Christian faith and it’s heathen counterparts.

Subtle acoustic numbers and driving Indie-Rock tracks rope the listener in as the storyteller tells tales of a faith orientated politician having to sell his soul, whilst his wine addled brother turns his back on God to live in the gutter.

Written and performed entirely by the man himself, Bazan manages not to overindulge his vision, which clocks in at a respectful 34 minutes.

Lyrical content aside, this album really grows on you in a good way and endears itself to your ears with every listen.
